Arts, culture, entertainment and events in Wilmington, NC

Lots of theatrical activity in Wilmington this weekend (see below for the full details), which also marks your last chance to see an intriguing and compelling play in Thalian Hall’s studio theater.

“William and Judith,” a drama by Cody Daigle-Orians presented by Wilmington’s AutenNotDoIt productions, runs through Sunday, Sept. 28. It imagines a past in which William Shakespeare had a talented sister, Judith, also a writer, who secretly served as both his collaborator and competitor.

Over the course of two hours, William, played by Charles Auten with a mix of sensitivity and a kind of artistic ruthlessness, and Tamica Katzmann, blending passion with a world-weary exhaustion, talk and argue about life, art, family, writing and a woman’s “place” in the theater (which, in Shakespeare’s time, didn’t exist).

The play makes one wonder about how many artistic masterpieces the world missed out when women weren’t “allowed” to write, or even read, and there are some fine performances, including a blustery Jon Ripley as Shakespeare’s personable but talent-light writer friend, John Fletcher.

Mirla Criste directs with a steady hand, pulling off, among other things, a clinic in color-blind casting, with Black actresses La’Tuan Dupre and Truu Allure Danns well-played as, respectively, Shakespeare’s wife and daughter.

Quite the ripping yarn if that’s what you’re down for this weekend. Now let’s see what else is going on around Wilmington.
