Corvettes for Sale: 43K-Mile 1978 Corvette Pace Car with L82 and Auto Transmission

One of first special edition models to be produced over Chevrolet’s 70+ years of the Corvette is the 1978 Corvette Indy 500 Pace Car. Despite their special edition status, Chevrolet actually made quite a few Pace Cars with a total of 6,502 produced with one designated for each of the Chevrolet dealerships in the USA.

Sales of these cars went stratospheric back in the day following a story in the Wall Street Journal that highlighted the model’s future collectability. That extra publicity caused a rush to Chevy dealerships, and more than a few were purchased and then stored away. Luckily, this Black/Silver Pace Car wasn’t one of those as it has been enjoyed for over three decades by its current owner.

This 1978 Corvette Indy 500 Pace Car is being offered on our sister website VetteFinders from our friend “Neighbor Mark” of Brink of Speed’s Octane Hour. Mark just recently added a Riverside Red 1964 Corvette to his garage and that means this outstanding Pace Car needs to find a new home.

Mark has enjoyed this ’78 Pace Car for 30 years now. It wears the very cool VIN sequence number of 3000 of the 6,502 Pace Cars produced. Originally delivered to a Missouri dealership according to the build sheet, it comes with many options including the FE7 Gymkhana Suspension, optional rear sway bar, and even an 8-track stereo. Current mileage on the car is showing 43,300 miles on the odometer.

The car was judged NCRS Top Flight back in the mid-90s and he has the owner history and all receipts from his ownership. Mark says he purchased the car wearing its original tires and it was repainted with lacquer paint in 1993. “No rust, no rain,” Mark says.

This Corvette is equipped with the 220-hp L82 V8 engine which is mated to a three-speed automatic transmission. The condition of the car looks outstanding both with the two-tone Black/Silver exterior while the silver interior still presents itself very well. In the video, Mark shows off the engine compartment and explains how he has kept everything looking original including his smog pump which he had rebuilt.

Mark also has much of the documentation on the 1978 Corvette including its sales invoice which shows a $14,441 MSRP back in the day. Mark is offering the car for $26,000 which seems very reasonable considering it’s an L82 and Mark’s long-term ownership.
