Advance Auto Parts is moving forward with its plan to close at least 500 corporate stores by mid-2025, and exiting another 200 independent locations.

“During 2024, we initiated transformative actions to reposition Advance for long-term success and value creation,” said Shane O’Kelly, president and chief executive officer, in a news release Wednesday.

The company plans to close the more than 700 locations by mid-2025, consolidate its distribution centers into 12 large facilities by the end of 2026, open 60 market hub locations by mid-2027, and optimize its transportation routes and freight to lower costs and improve productivity, the release said.

Advance Auto Parts said it hopes to improve business performance by focusing on core retail improvements with hopes to achieve consistent profitable growth.

The company’s full year 2024 operating loss was $713.3 million, or 7.8% of net sales, the company said in the fourth-quarter earnings report. The adjusted full year 2024 operating income was $35.2 million or 0.4% of net sales, compared with adjusted operating income of $56.3 million or 0.6% of net sales in the prior year.

As of Dec. 28, 2024, Advance operated 4,788 stores (4,507 Advance, 281 Carquest), primarily within the United States, with additional locations in Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the company said. The company also served 934 independently owned Carquest branded stores across these locations in addition to Mexico and various Caribbean islands. 

During the year that ended Dec. 28, the company opened 42 stores and 40 closed 40.

What Michigan stores will close?

It is unclear which Michigan stores will be impacted by the auto parts company as it reorganizes. The release did not specify which locations will close.

Two Michigan stores were listed for sale by Hilco Real Estate. Hilco says the properties are available “individually or in any combination,” according to reporting from USA Today. It includes stores at the following locations in Michigan:

  • Battle Creek: 1405 Columbia Ave. W
  • Wyoming: 1784 28th At. SW

There are also plans to standardize the remaining stores and accelerate the pace of new store openings.

The company operates 139 stores in Michigan, including four each in Lansing and Warren; two in Detroit, Livonia, Holland and Sturgis; and one each in Howell, Canton, Cheboygan, Novi, Port Huron, South Lyon, Troy and Westland.
